SOME THINGS THAT BOND THE TWO OF US
by Robert K. Johnson

(for my sister)

—the joy that spills through our bodies
when we see spring-widening buds,
our willingness to become

absorbed in the conjured worlds
in films and plays, our contempt
for get-rich politicians—

are things that also bring
other people together.
               What bonds you and me

even more tightly is
seven days a week
of every year, our lives

dangle somewhere stripped
of everything but feelings
intense as crackling flames.
