December Reflections

Before the winter sun sets once again behind the mountain;
Before gentle sleep comes once again;
May I learn to sing better Thy song;
May I learn to stroke more gracefully the strings of my lyre;
May I learn to speak the words that dwell within my heart;
May I learn the song that rises from before the beginning of time,
             And reaches beyond the sadness.

May I sing the song the magpie and redbird and owl know so well;
The song the deep starry night embraces in all its splendor;
The song the ancient ones sang; the anthem of peace;
The melodies caressing the land like soft mists draped over the valleys;
The melodies sparkling and clear in the morning air
            as raindrops fall upon the veranda;
The melodies nestled along every trailway in the silent redwood grove;
The melodies arising from the stillness just before the dawn.

Before the winter sun sets once again behind the mountain;
Before gentle sleep comes once again;
May I learn to sing better Thy song.
