Frozen Tears
by Elizabeth Reeke

—for the Boston Marathon, April 15, 2013

The strings stretch before me,
But where has the desire gone?
Outside, the cactus blossom fades.

I lift my fingers but no sound comes
And my heart lies muffled in sadness.
In the garden, the birdsong has fallen still.

I look to the morning light for inspiration,
But I am weighed down with the darkness
And the silence sheds tears.
