The Major

Major, I owe you what
anyone might owe a stranger
met in lamplight down
a charcoal maze of streets:

the thanks for good directions
patiently dispensed where
anyone might stand convinced
I had been vaguely sent.

But more, I owe you for
this life long afterwards:
hallways and rooms beyond
a secret seeming door.
