A Toast to Akhmatova
on the Anniversary of Julia’s Death
by Elizabeth Bailey

Verses of tears and grief
record the dolor of your life.

You lost a son, a lover,
your country, your muse.

You lived in the darkest age.
But your song of the silver willow

lightens the forest; your
cherries blow summer into town.
