GIVE ALL YOU HAVE TO THE POOR
by L. N. Allen

Because everything should have a place and be there
firmly enough to leave an impression of itself
when it’s gone. Because things and memories share
similar atoms. Because the mind is a shelf

in constant need of vigorous dusting
to let the blessings shine and relegate the curses
to creases in a dust cloth. Because love isn’t asking,
but answering. Because we can’t rehearse

miracles. Because there are no shades of gray
in rainbows. Because the ugliest scars
are indiscernible from veins.
Because nothing’s worth saving but hearts

poured out as an offering,
not ministered to, but ministering.
