Your mother always called you “Baby Jesus” so it was no surprise when I read
That Stevie Smith’s poem “Was He Married?” is about Christ —
Had you known her?
You had known many before and now after and I fear during me
But I digress
This is not the test of a good poem or indeed a good man
One who can “mould disciples”
Who is “never wrong”
Who loves not in “the human way”
Of course a man had written the commentary — I’m sure he made no mistake —
Extolling anew the elusive god who deifies love
And I in your bed again
