A celebration of Julia Budenz's poem in five volumes . . .

THE GARDENS OF FLORA BAUM

. . . will take place at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, October 11, 2011, in the
Radcliffe Gymnasium, 18 Mason Street, Cambridge, Massachusetts.

An advance copy of the set of volumes prepared for publication by
Carpathia Press will be on display.

The program will include readings from the work by Laura Benedetti, Emily Lyle, and Rebecca Shrimpton, and a performance of "Daughter, Awake With the Moon" for soprano and piano, by Philadelphia composer Janice Hamer, with lyrics from Budenz's poem, performed by Tamara Ryan, soprano, and Andrew Hauze, pianist. There will be a wine reception to follow.

Organized by Emily Lyle, this event is open to all and no booking is required. However, if you do expect to attend, it would help in planning if you would let Roger Sinnott know (email rsinnott@post.harvard.edu). At the event, he'll have more information about the publication of the volumes.

Harvard's Center for Literary and Cultural Studies held an Epic Day on May 19, 1989. For that occasion (when this picture was taken), Julia Budenz recited Homeric poetry in Greek and read "Homeric" sections from her long poem, The Gardens of Flora Baum. The poem was by then nearly half completed, and she continued writing it for another two decades until her death last December.
